New Delhi: The Ministry of Power has issued guidelines on the utilization of allocated power of central generating stations by the states. States have been requested to use the allocated power for supplying electricity to the consumers. Along with this, in the case of surplus power, the states have been requested to inform so that it can be allocated to the needy states.

If a state is found to be selling electricity at the power exchange or is not scheduling this allocated power, their allocated power may be temporarily reduced or withdrawn. Such power can be reallocated to other states that need such power.

The Ministry of Power said that it has made energy accounting of distribution companies (discoms) mandatory to reduce power losses. The Ministry said in a statement that as part of the ongoing reforms in the power sector, the Ministry of Power has made regular energy accounting mandatory for distribution companies. In the notification issued under this, the discom will have to get quarterly energy accounting done through a certified energy manager within 60 days. There will also be an annual energy audit by an independent accredited energy auditor. Both these reports will be published publicly. This arrangement will help in preventing loss of electricity, theft.
