Mirabai Chanu created history by winning India’s first silver medal in weightlifting in Olympic history. Chanu won a medal in the 49kg category. The 26-year-old lifted 87kg in the snatch and 115kg in the clean and jerk event to create a total of 202 to create Indian history in the final of the 49kg category. With the silver medal, Chanu has also opened India’s medal account in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Hou Zhihui of China won the gold medal in this event, while Indonesia won the bronze medal.

Chanu was seen as one of India’s strongest medal contenders at the Olympics this year and was in good form. Earlier this year, he had set a clean and jerk world record in his category by lifting 114 kg. In the final, Zhihui of China set an Olympic record by lifting 94 kg in the snatch event. She topped the table after the snatch ended, while the clean and jerk topped the table.
