Mount Merapi: Concern has started increasing about the world’s most active Mount Merapi volcano in Indonesia. On Saturday, when people saw the volcano exploding, panic spread there. In a short while, only clouds of gas were visible in the sky. Lava was seen pouring from the volcano. After which the authorities halted tourism and mining activities around the country’s most active volcano.
After this activity in Merapi volcano, only hot ash clouds and rocks were visible on the densely populated island of Java. Lava was raining everywhere. Lava was seen flowing up to 7 kilometers (4.3 mi) down the slopes of the volcano. Abdul Muhri, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency, said a column of hot clouds rose 100 meters (yards) into the air.
The explosion blinded the sun light for the whole day. Many villages were covered with its ashes. There is no information about any casualty. Hanik Humaida, head of Yogyakarta’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center, said it was Merapi’s biggest lava flow since authorities raised the alert level to the second-highest level in November 2020.
He said residents living on Merapi’s slopes were advised to stay 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the crater’s mouth and to be aware of the danger posed by the lava. Tourism and mining activities were halted. Please tell that about 1.25 lakh people live within a radius of 10 kilometers (6 miles) of the volcano.
Merapi is the most active of more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has recently erupted with clouds of lava and gas. Its last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people and displaced 20,000 villagers.
